Toke Makinwa suffered a double tragedy when she was just eight years old. She admitted that the death of her parents changed her. Despite everything, Toke Makinwa went on to become one of the biggest media personalities in the country.

Most of our parents have a vision of who we would be when we grow up, at least career-wise. Toke Makinwa’s parents were no different. Her dad thought that she would be a lawyer because of her talkative nature. Born on 3 November 1984, Toke Makinwa, age 37, is now being paid to, well talk. 

Unfortunately, her childhood took a painful turn when both of her parents died when she was only eight years old. Speaking about this experience, Toke said that her parents had that wish. Even so, things changed. She became introverted and was an angry teenager. 

After, Toke was brought up by foster parents, Chief and Mrs Pius Akinyelure. Toke had three siblings - Ope Makinwa, Busaya Makinwa, and Femi Makinwa.  

Schooling

Despite the tragedy of losing her parents at such a young age, Toke Makinwa excelled in school. She went to Federal Government Girls College, Oyo State for her secondary education after which she joined the prestigious University of Lagos (UNILAG). She graduated with a degree in English and Literature.  

Career

For most of us, whenever we watch our favourite on-air personalities, we tend to imagine that they have their lives figured out. Whilst Toke Makinwa admits that she was a talkative child, she says that she didn't know what she wanted to pursue. She didn’t know that she would become the media personality that she is today. It was until she was 18 years old that she realised her interest in radio.

Toke Makinwa made her radio debut in 2010 on a Lagos radio show 93.7FM as the host of The Graveyard Shift. She was so good that it took her only six months to be slotted on the station’s morning program, Morning Drive Show. If you couldn’t get enough of Toke, she launched a late-night talk show Rhythms of The Night.  

Toke Makinwa only went on to do big things. Two years later, she started her YouTube channel Toke Moments where she talks about real-life situations like “Why women hate each other” or “how to get married “Naija style” which is her most popular video with over 190,000 views. The channel was a big success. 

In between, Toke Makinwa hosted some of the biggest events. The Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria (MBGN) beauty pageant, the Future Awards, she also co-hosted 3 Live Chicks on FlyTime TV, City People Awards, a Hip Hop World Magazine interview and talk series Trending and the Headies Awards in 2013 & 2014.

She also presented Ebony Life TV program moments. Other programs she’s hosted include a musical talent show The Voice, BBC Naija season 6 finale and Gulder Ultimate Search season 12.

According to popular blogger Stella Dimoko Korkus, Maje impregnated Anita Solomon, his ex-girlfriend whom he flew to the United Kingdom. Their affair, Maje and Anita, happened the same period of time he’d been dating Toke. Toke revealed that Maje admitted to having an affair with Anita after initially denying everything.

He claimed that the version of events presented was false. He wanted the book to be recalled and circulation ceased. Maje also demanded one million naira as part of the lawsuit.

Maje won the case. Toke was directed to pay him the requested sum, cease the publishing of the book and delete information said to be defamatory.
