The world woke up to the release of the Oprah Exclusive interview with ex-royals Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, who granted their first interview since they left England in 2020.

While many people did not know the couple personally, they were constantly drawn into the web of the United Kingdom’s famous couple, made so by the English press. We were all constantly updated with news about them, especially about Meghan. The new couple was kept in the spotlight for many reasons ranging from Harry’s decision to marry a black woman, and their inability to lead normal lives because of this.

When the discussions arose from the revelations in the interview, some Nigerians took to social media to celebrate the love between the two. They also made comparisons between Nigerian family problems and the inability of a Nigerian man to take such a bold step by siding his wife over his family.

Others immediately brought receipts of Mr P: Peter Okoye, one half of the defunct P-Square, who left everything he was used to in defence of his wife Lola when she was being disrespected by his family members.

Peter Okoye (Mr P) did more than Harry to protect his wife. Fought his family and left them. Quarrelled with his twin. Scattered Psquare, a legacy world-beating successful music group for his wife. But he was still villainized here by men and women. Is he not a Nigerian man?

If Peter Okoye (Mr P) & Lola Omotayo were Royalties in Nigeria and they left the Royalty to fend for themselves, trust me, Nigerians will attack them. Peter left everything including his blood twin just to protect his family. But Prince Harry doing the same thing Peter did
to protect his wife Meghan Markle and Nigerians are clapping for him. But they vilified and mock Peter Okoye countless times on this app. Nigerians especially our Ladies and selective amnesia with a touch of hypocrisy are 5&6. Tueh!

Some people did not believe the comparison was a worthy one:

Yes, Peter Okoye did hos best to protect his family. Left his brothers to be with his wife and kids. But I don't know about him doing more than Harry and that should never be the point Harry stood up for his wife against an institution that has been around for centuries
And this brought up another side to the argument, with the first tweep claiming that Nigerians are more loyal to the British monarchy than their fellow citizens

Not you saying the monarchy means more to Nigerians than Psquare. You're blaspheming.

Love conquers All. How Peter Okoye stood by his wife through thick and thin. This is what most men in the world, who claim to love their wives, need to emulate. Thank you, Mr P
Mr P found out he was trending and tweeted:

So, I see my self trending for Standing Up for what is right! This life eh! your own na your own! Protect yours! #MyFamilyFirst #IKnowLikeTrouble

Without a doubt, Peter made a bold move but no conclusion has been reached yet on how far Nigerian men will go to support their wives.
