The producer, songwriter, entrepreneur and philanthropist is gearing up to her debut album Original Copy's release, we caught up with the powerhouse that is DJ Cuppy.

2020 has been quite the busy year for Cuppy. She made history by landing  Apple Music's first-ever radio show in Africa, called Africa Now Radio with Cuppy.

It's been three months since the launch of the iconic radio show Africa Now and Cuppy says the "feedback has been astounding!" The DJ says she always knew that it was "going to be a great show" but it has superseded her expectations.

"Starting the week by spotlighting pure and undiluted African talents gives me so much joy and satisfaction," says Cuppy.

The highlight of the show for Cuppy has to be speaking on the cover stars about their sounds and sharing exclusive stories about their journeys.

"I’ve always been an avid champion of the African culture; its music, creativity, potentials, talents… everything! So being part of a show that allows me to do exactly that is mind-blowing; a show by
Africans for Africans."

Ahead of her album release Cuppy dropped the banger Jollof on the Jet featuring Rema and Rayvanny. The single in less than a month of its release has seen huge success a Top 5 on Triller Billboard and charted in over 15 countries.

“Jollof on the Jet is a song that is a breath of fresh air and also picks on you know the pride of Africa through our food and through our music,” says Cuppy.

The song was created without Cuppy meeting Rema or Rayvanny in real life and Cuppy says working with them "was so interesting".

"The beat and whole idea of Jollof on a Jet encapsulated Rema. He loved it and wanted to be on the track. After Rema did his thing, Rayvanny added that extra Bongo spice and we created a sizzling masterpiece."

Cuppy has nothing but positive words about her collaborators calling them "talented artists" and can't wait till she meets them in person.

"It was such a great pleasure working with them... I can’t wait to meet them in person; hopefully on stage!"

Cuppy's album Original Copy drops on August 21 and on it she has collaborated with the likes of Julian Marley, Wyclef Jean, Stonebwoy, Ms Banks and Darkoo.

With a total of 12 tracks, each has a distinctive sound and a total of 13 artists are featured.

"Africa is endowed with loads of talented creatives and I worked with some of the best on this project," says Cuppy.

Her goal was to create an album that "portrays Afrobeats in all its glory" and she couldn't be prouder of what she has created.

"I’m so proud of Original Copy! It is Pure Perfection; I’m positive will be a game-changer. I’ve finally reached a place where I’m okay with who I am as an artist," she adds.

Cuppy is currently signed to Platoon Records and she says working with them "has been really fantastic".

"It’s great to work with a partner that is so invested in my continent."

Cuppy was connected to Apple’s artist services company, Platoon Records by her dear friend Mr Eazi.

She explains that after they heard album demo, the contract was in her inbox.

Whilst 2020 has been quite the year for Cuppy it's hard to ignore that she has achieved so much during an entire global pandemic.

Cuppy admits that "the past few months have been quite challenging."

"I never would have envisaged a global pandemic when I was noting down my plans for the year. I’ve tried to stay focused and still work on my plans for the year as much as I can whilst finding ways to remain productive."

Cuppy has been able to finish her debut album and start her radio show all during a pandemic which has resulted in a lockdown of several countries across the globe.

"I would say the lockdown advanced my plans more than it slowed it down because the shift to virtual connections sort of strengthened unity in
the world and now there’s a larger global audience and more opportunities."

Despite the restrictions, Cuppy is grateful as she has has been able to achieve so much during this time, now that's a focused queen.

DJ Cuppy's album Original Copy will be released on August 21.
